INTRODUCTION by Patrick Teo
My discovery of the linear technique is a new dimension in visual art. This concept was initiated in 2005 at the time when I was accustomed to the orthodox method of painting. To make the transition at that point in time was difficult. This decision to venture into an unknown territory was a crucial step but I perservered.
As I progressed by grasping the skill of free flow linear maneuverability, an astounding idea came to light in my search for a theme – figurative representations blended with nostalgic activity should be an appropriate choice. Painting from memory with the help of scanty photographic references, I have to render my works in semi-abstract presentation as it has all the values I need to round up my works.

The figurative elements play a paramount role to arouse one’s emotion. The semi-caricature characters consist of dramatic facial expressions and exaggerated body gestures with the injection of exhilarating humour and hilarious idiosyncrasies. These are employed to evoke light-heartedness amist hardship when potraying the yesteryears.
This whole endeavour has given me the opportunity to preserve forgotten scenes in my works. This would, I hope, be an eye-opener to our younger generation of our forefathers’ experiences during those impoverished times. Thus, this series serves as a strong reminder of Singapore’s identity and heritage. It has certainly been a nostalgic walk down memory lane for me.
